10.9 million, or 22.5 percent, of all residential properties with a mortgage were “underwater,” meaning they owed more on their mortgage than they could sell their home for today’s market.
Add to that an unemployment rate that’s above 9 percent coupled, with widespread underemployment, and you have a situation where millions of homeowners are drowning in debt.
The unfortunate fact is that among the 6.3 million homeowners in America who are in some stage of foreclosure right now, only a small percentage are reaching out for help.
